Atty. Bruce Rivera on SC’s Poe Decision

Poe's citizenship, Philippine star front page

A lawyer from San Beda College and a professor, Atty. Bruce Rivera, shares his personal views regarding the Supreme Court’s decision allowing Grace Poe to run and be voted upon as president of the Philippines. The SC overturned the Comelec’s earlier ruling disqualifying Poe to run.

Naiyak ako when he mentioned that in their family, he’s the only one holding a Filipino passport. He refused to be an American citizen.
Sa amin din kasi, ako lang naiwan sa Pilipinas kong mahal.

The Supreme Court must rule based on what’s written in our constitution. I have nothing against Sen. Grace Poe. But there are very basic qualifications that must be met before a person must be allowed to run. These are laws that must be non-negotiable. They must be strictly followed or else every law in this country would be debatable.

Poe's eligibility, Philippine star

I would like to quote what my driver had said. “Mam, Americano naman talaga si Grace Poe. Naging Pilipino dahil tatakbong senador. Ngayon naman yung asawa nya Pilipino daw dahil magiging first gentleman. Si Imelda tumira sa Hawaii pero hindi naging American citizen. Hindi nya tinalikuran ang bansa natin”.

There’s a big chance that Sen. Grace Poe would be our next president based on the latest Pulse Asia Survey. Her popularity could soar in a few days and weeks. People who are afraid that Binay may be graft-prone, that Mar is indecisive, that Mirriam is sick, that Duterte is kanto-boy style, may vote for Poe. Some sectors are asking, including Teddy Boy Locsin, if she wins, who will run the country? Who surrounds her?
