Spectacular Aurora Borealis in Rovaniemi

March 18, 2018 Sunday

On our last night in Rovaniemi, we were blessed with at least an hour of spectacular display of one of nature’s beauty, the aurora borealis, the scientific name of Northern Lights.

What we witnessed were beyond compare from those we’ve seen the past nights. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The sky’s show was beyond words and comprehension.

It all started with an alarm at around 8 pm. Our glass igloo has an alarm installed and the hotel sets out the alarm when the Borealis appears so that guests could look up and witness it.

At first, we saw the standard arches and streaks of green lights. Then as the night progressed, the sky moved and more dancing lights appeared as if there was music. It was like watching a great performance with a conductor. it was as if someone was orchestrating all those astonishing light band show.

I took this photo using my cellphone only. My daughter was able to capture several nice photos. I will try to borrow at least one good photo.

It was extremely cold outside of the igloo. We went in and out to put on more warm clothes. The temperature must have been at least negative 15 or 20. We were hurrying because the shapes of the aurora changed within seconds. We didn’t want to miss the spectacular display. My neck was hurting from looking up and my hands, ears, and feet were cold. I could not hold my camera and keep my hands out without cover for a few seconds lest they get numbed.

I didn’t want to blink. I was just totally mesmerized by what was happening in the silent night sky. Parang star wars movie yung mga effects.

We did not only see vivid green. We saw purple and blue too. We saw coronas forming above us and blasting into spheres and streaks across the horizon. Moving fast and spreading like boiling oil dumped on a pail of water.

The magnificent lights were shimmering from all directions, swaying and changing form and path in seconds while dazzling our eyes.

Aside from the Northern Lights display, I also saw as a bonus two shooting stars. Of course I made a wish. I didn’t expect to see shooting stars.
The big one came when I was laying down on the bed and watching in awe the dazzling nature’s sky show. Then all of a sudden, a big shooting star appeared right below the big borealis and it was for some reason moving horizontally and not falling vertically. My daughter and I were screaming in excitement. I had to blink and open my eyes wider and focus to make sure that I was neither dreaming nor imagining things. After I have made my verdict that what I was seeing was truly a shooting star naku nagpanic ako kasi I wanted to make a wish. I did say a short prayer and I made a wish too. For my son.

I wish I were a poet, a literature writer so I could describe properly what I witnessed that night. It was so beyond this world. Alam mo ba yung expression sa Tagalog, yun pang kanto boys “pinaandaran ako”? Ganun yung feeling ko.
It was our last night at Rovaniemi and the Northern Lights put on the grandest show on earth to fill our hearts and memories for a lifetime.
