My weekend and the Mandalay Bay Tragedy

This weekend turned crazy. I could not wrap around my mind with what happened at the Mandalay Bay. I am actually too shocked.

Sometime last Friday afternoon, the Uber driver took the wrong exit and made a turn around near Mandalay Bay. I could see the glistening golden building ahead of us. We landed on the street fronting the hotel and passed by the side of the concert venue. I noticed the big spotlights and I even told the Uber driver “Oh, there’s an outdoor concert”. Naisip ko pa baka si Bruno Mars.

By Saturday noon, I was already having some allergic reaction from the cold, wind, heat. It’s chilly in the morning and at night. It’s hot during mid-day. When I enter establishments, their air-conditioning are in full blast extreme naman. Even if it’s still generally warm, I always bring a sweater and a shawl. By Saturday afternoon, I was already feeling feverish.

My sister and Bong drove for 4 hours from Lost Angeles to spend the weekend with me here in Las Vegas. First time I am staying in an Airbnb (a separate story) away from The Strip. I was trying to rent the room adjacent to the room I occupy but a couple from Colombia are checking in so I asked for the owner’s permission to let my sister and Bong stay with me in my room. He agreed, of course for an extra fee.

When I found out that my sister is spending two nights, I thought of watching either Criss Angel or David Copperfield on Sunday night. I searched for tickets but since I was already feeling under the weather, I didn’t finish my surf. I thought I would just ask Len and Bong what they wanted to do on Sunday night.

On Saturday evening, when they were an hour away, Len asked me if I wanted Jack in the Box. I said no. I was still full. Actually I was not full. I had no appetite because I felt like I was going down with a cold. They arrived on Saturday night at 9:30 pm. Nagkasya naman kami dito sa room, although ang liit.

My throat was really bad. I practically was up the whole night. It was too painful to swallow even a few drops of water. I couldn’t breathe. Without any drama, I was beginning to worry that I would die choking. I wanted to call my Kuya Junior in the middle of the night kasi inaatake ako ng nerbyos, baka ma-heart attack ako pag hindi ako makahinga.

Len and I slept on the queen bed while Bong slept on the twin airbed they bought before coming over. Sunday morning I just wanted to stay in bed but I didn’t want to spoil my bonding with my sister. We had breakfast at the Filipino restaurant.
Bong and Len had garlic rice, beef tapa na hindi lasang tapa, etc.

Len checked out Halloween Decors at Lowe’s Home Improvement but Bong said they won’t fit in their car. They brought kasi a small Toyota to save on gas.

Pier 1 Imports has very nice items but a little bit pricey. Before the US financial crisis, they used to import a lot of home accessories from the Philippines.

I bought the chicken for $35 down from the $50 original price. I wanted the cow too but it was $70. I will buy the cow on my next visit if it’s still there.

For me, chicken is a feel-good home decor.

I bought the rectangular glass tray for $20 = tax. I love the blue color and the chirping birds are adorable.

This place is huge. We stayed here for about half an hour because Bong’s arranged for a merienda with his friend Danny.

We then drove farther away for some 15 minutes more to reach Cutting Board Filipino Gastro Pub in the Northwest area.
